SmartFilter for UltraBand Content Control

PeerApp UltraBand engine integrates McAfee® SmartFilter Web content categorization engine, allowing network operators to leverage pre-defined filtering categories to have intelligent control over Web traffic flow in their network, for purposes of filtering of objectionable content and local regulation compliance.

By preventing inappropriate Internet use, service providers can better serve their subscribers, reduce Web security risks, and comply with local laws.

SmartFilter Integration

The SmartFilter engine is fully integrated into UltraBand content filtering framework, allowing operators to set up classes of Web content with control policies associated with them.

The SmartFilter engine provides extensive content categorization, rating, and matching functionality for URL filtering. The software runs directly on the UltraBand system providing a single point in the network for media caching and content control. More than 90 standard filtering categories are provided and over 20 million Web sites are categorized as part of the McAfee SmartFilter service. Examples of standard categories are “Adult Content” and “Gambling.” Service providers can further define customized filtering categories.

Based on the site categorization an action can be taken to block a requested site/URL or redirect a user to an external site or page. In addition, the UltraBand solution supports built-in customized URL filtering to block a specific Web site as well as specific YouTube video.

SmartFilter is an optional software add-on to UltraBand software engine and as such requires separate software license to enable the content categorization capabilities.

Management and Reporting

Administrators configure SmartFilter policies and settings using the UltraBand CLI or XML-based configuration file. In a grid configuration, content filtering policies are configured once for all cache engines. The McAfee SmartFilter worldwide URL classification database can be updated on a daily basis or on a manual basis over the out-of-band management port, at the discretion of the network administrator. Database updates are propagated from UltraBand management server to all cache engines in the system in an automatic fashion.

The UltraBand UBView management interface provides summary and detailed content filtering statistics as well as SmartFilter license notifications and status information for monitoring and reporting purposes. Detailed per-session content filtering data is also included in Call Detail Records transaction log.

PeerApp Performance
"With PeerApp we need half the caching hardware we would need if we use other caching appliances. And by supporting the most protocols and services, the UltraBand is able to produce more bandwidth savings for the same amount of traffic.

Perhaps most importantly, our users clearly notice that YouTube no longer waits to buffer the video."
