Transparent Caching in DSL Operator Networks

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is the world’s most common form of broadband Internet access. DSL operators worldwide are seeing tremendous growth in network traffic, driven by consumer demands for video content, file sharing, software updates and peer-to-peer services. Operators need strategies that help them cope with traffic growth on their existing networks while continuing to serve them as they migrate to higher-speed optical fiber access.

Transparent caching helps operators in two ways. First, it reduces network cost associated with constantly having to expand the backbone network and Internet transit links. Second, it improves subscriber quality of experience. Transparent caching achieves both by automatically detecting popular content and serving it from as close to the subscriber as possible.

PeerApp’s UltraBand can be installed anywhere within the IP portion of a DSL network – from the transit or peering point out to the BRAS or Border Network Gateway (BNG). As the cache moves closer to the edge, its network savings impact grows because it is relieving traffic across a greater portion of the network. QoE impact also grows because content is being delivered closer to the subscriber.

As the cache moves closer to the core, its statistical caching performance increases because traffic is aggregated over a larger number of subscribers. UltraBand is most commonly deployed at the BRAS location.

UltraBand scales from large systems designed for centralized deployments to smaller systems for distributed deployments. UltraBand connects via existing network elements using policy-based routing or a DPI switch.

Benefits
  • Operating expense savings through reduced need to expand IP transit links
  • Capital expense savings through ability to defer investments in network capacity expansion
  • Improved subscriber QoE, resulting in a stronger value proposition and improved customer retention
  • Full transparency, resulting in preservation of application logic, ensured freshness of content, and strict adherence to content copyright laws
  • Low total cost of ownership (TCO) through simple provisioning and automatic adaptation to changing traffic composition

The PeerApp Impact

"UltraBand’s ability to scale from small to very large systems using common software, features and management allows us to distribute the caches to the network edge, for the best possible user experience and savings across the largest part of the network."
