Transparent Caching in Mobile Networks

Mobile operators have been impacted by the surge in mobile data traffic on their networks. This trend was originally driven by the proliferation of smartphones such as the iPhone. Now iPads and Android tablet devices with their larger screens and more powerful processors are driving yet more mobile data consumption.

The degree to which an operator can consistently provide content with high quality has become a primary source of brand differentiation. At the same time, operators are conscious of the cost impact of all this content traffic on their networks. Mobile operators need strategies that help them cope with traffic growth on existing 3G and 3.5G networks while continuing to serve them as they deploy 4G LTE.

Transparent caching helps cable operators in two ways. First, it reduces network costs associated with constantly having to expand the backbone network and Internet transit links. Second, it improves subscriber quality of experience. Transparent caching achieves both by automatically detecting popular content and serving it from as close to the subscriber as possible.

PeerApp’s UltraBand can be installed anywhere within the IP portion of a mobile packet core network, usually at the IP edge. In 3G networks, UltraBand is typically deployed at the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). In LTE networks it is deployed at the PDN Gateway, or PGW. UltraBand scales from large systems designed for large sites and centralized deployments to smaller systems for distributed deployments. UltraBand connects via existing network elements using policy-based routing or a DPI switch.

Benefits
  • Improved subscriber QoE, resulting in a stronger value proposition and improved retention of high ARPU smartphone and tablet subscribers
  • Operating expense savings through reduced need to expand IP transit links
  • Capital expense savings through ability to defer investments in packet core capacity expansion
  • Full transparency, resulting in preservation of application logic, ensured freshness of content, and strict adherence to content copyright laws
  • Low total cost of ownership (TCO) through simple provisioning and automatic adaptation to changing traffic composition

The PeerApp Impact

"Delivering the best possible mobile broadband performance on the iPhone and other leading-edge devices is core to our brand differentiation. UltraBand has helped us optimize our network to serve content at top speeds."
