Carrier Class Performance

Overview

PeerApp’s UltraBand media caching software is a carrier class product that operates on industry standard hardware to provide unmatched performance and scalability. It is available in several standard configurations which cost-effectively scale to meet the needs of network operators from small-scale satellite operators with a few thousand subscribers to large-scale network operators with millions of subscribers. The UltraBand software utilizes clustering combined with modular caching and storage elements to enable incremental system growth to meet increasing traffic requirements. The clustering capability enables customers to cost-effectively scale from a single cache engine to 16 cache engines and up to 60 TB of storage in a high-performance storage area network (SAN). These capabilities give UltraBand deployments the smallest footprint and power consumption of any multi-service caching and content delivery solution on the market.

The system enables network operators to manage up to 20 Gbps of traffic across multiple services such as BitTorrent, YouTube, MySpace, MegaUpload and RapidShare using a single caching solution.

The technology provides high-speed caching in an efficient, compact and easily scalable solution that can support more than 8 million simultaneous sessions and serve up to 500,000 subscribers. It runs on industry-standard hardware and has an open architecture, so it fits easily into operators’ networks. It also adapts easily to new services and applications as they become popular eliminating the need for separate application proxies or servers for each new protocol or service.

UltraBand Capabilities

Availability, Reliability and Manageability

The highly available platform supports M+N cache server load balancing and redundancy, and optional RAID storage array mirroring to protect against disk failure. Software and hardware watchdog functions along with non-disruptive remote software upgrades deliver very high system availability. In the unlikely event of a system failure, bypass network interface cards are installed to prevent service interruption. In addition, a fallback mechanism will cease redirecting traffic in the UltraBand solution preventing service interruption in case of any failure. The clustered system architecture also eliminates a single point of failure and also allows for hitless software upgrades to minimize operating downtime for maintenance.

Simultaneous HTTP and P2P Support

The UltraBand utilizes a modular platform that simultaneously caches and accelerates YouTube and other types of progressive download video, HTTP-based software update services such as Microsoft Windows Update, as well as Web-based and peer-to-peer file sharing applications. P2P protocols supported include BitTorrent, E-Donkey, Gnutella/Gnutella2, and Ares. The UltraBand supports a number of advanced HTTP caching features, including support for Adobe Flash video “fast forward”, and support for Web services that utilize dynamic URLs, such as Rapidshare. The UltraBand architecture provides for the non-disruptive addition and integration of new protocols, applications, and protocol updates.

Cluster Computing Technology

The UltraBand solution supports large-scale and rapidly growing multi-gigabit carrier networks. The clustered computing technology scales from a single cache server (engine) to up to sixteen cache servers, all connected as a unified distributed computing platform.

Up to ten very high capacity storage array enclosures function as a single storage area network (SAN) providing a total capacity of 60TB of available caching storage. Cache and storage servers are interconnected via a high speed Ethernet network using open, cost-effective iSCSI technology.

SAN-based Shared Content Storage

The UltraBand cluster file system provides complete virtualization of stored content, enabling each cache server to read and write any file to any one of the SAN-based storage arrays in the UltraBand caching system. By making a large content pool available to each cache server the UltraBand delivers higher caching efficiency. Interconnecting separate scalable storage and network processing elements via affordable iSCSI SAN technology lowers system costs and reduces total cost of ownership.

Unparalleled Scalability

Up to 16 caching engines in a cluster can process traffic up to 20Gbps capacity with up to 8 million simultaneous sessions. Up to 10 storage enclosures yields up to 60TB storage for each caching engine.
