Combing Content Delivery Service with Intelligent Media Caching

The Video Internet has arrived. Consumers have a seemingly unquenchable thirst for video and other media content delivered over the Internet. All this content, delivered mostly over peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and via HTTP streaming, is consuming huge amounts of bandwidth, as much as 70% of Internet bandwidth, according to some experts. Further, analysts are projecting a 10x increase in broadband bandwidth consumption by 2012.

Moreover, many content owners are shifting their content delivery (in part or in whole) to companies that specialize in P2P, to take advantage of the favorable economics of P2P delivery. This means that additional P2P traffic will flow through ISPs’ physical plants. ISPs (cable operators and telcos) are understandably worried about the effects of all this P2P video traffic on their networks

The only practical solution: deliver content from the ISP edge based using caching and acceleration systems.

Pando and PeerApp are collaborating to deliver an ISP-friendly approach to P2P called ISP caching for peer-assisted delivery. The solution integrates Pando’s Content Delivery Service with PeerApp’s Intelligent Media Caching, located within the ISP network.

Much of the video and media traffic carried by P2P applications is highly cacheable. Moreover, if these files are cached at the right place – within the ISP network - much of the repetitive re-transporting of the files can be eliminated.

ISP-based caching has several benefits for content owners:

  • Increases media consumption per user
  • Provides wire-speed delivery
  • Further reduces delivery costs
  • Eliminates congestion, packet loss and link failures – events that often cause long delays in downloads.

Both ISP-based content acceleration by PeerApp and peer-assisted delivery by Pando are leveraging the scale of edge networks for content delivery. As Internet service providers are rolling out the next ‘wideband’ generation of high-speed Internet, such as FTTH and DOCSIS 3.0, the edge-based delivery is becoming a critical component for success of Internet video.

The following chart describes the utilization of the Internet subscriber broadband connection at various access speeds (512Kbps to 5Mbps), when content is cached within the ISP network and delivered to subscribers versus delivered by a CDN outside of the ISP network. The data clearly indicates that PeerApp ISP media caching solutions in conjunction with Pando Content Delivery Service are best positioned to fully utilize the power of the next-generation Internet.

Beyond the technical benefits of cooperative caching, these partnerships expand the reach of content, increase content revenues, and enable worldwide distribution.

PeerApp products are deployed in ISP networks worldwide. PeerApp’s solution is the only caching solution that is integrated with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) infrastructure solutions that deliver transparency and support of all media traffic: HTTP Flash video, HTTP downloads and all of the major P2P protocols and services. The PeerApp solution supports 10Gbps grid infrastructure environments for carrier-grade media delivery.

The Pando-PeerApp joint solution is important news for both ISPs and anyone who distributes movies, TV programming, video clips and other forms of media over the Internet. The combination of peer-to-peer delivery with caching provides a superior consumer experience.

For ISPs, caching within the network means that they can save much of the expensive international transit and peering bandwidth, or apply it to other applications. Caching also ensures much faster and higher-quality content delivery, making subscribers much happier, reducing customer churn and improving brand image.

With PeerApp’s content distribution platform, ISPs can monetize content delivered within their networks. These service providers can efficiently aggregate content and take advantage of local targeted advertising, subscription models and other methods of monetizing local content delivery.

Pando’s service when combined with PeerApp’s caching solution serves to accelerate the adoption of commercial P2P content delivery. This integrated caching architecture -- functionally similar to client/server -- provides superior economics, scales larger and more efficiently, and delivers a guaranteed quality of experience not possible with any other solution.
